Autumn Scent by Jinghua Gao Dalia.
Dalia has a rich artistic heritage and a full and successful art career. She’s the daughter of leading Chinese artist Gao Yi-hung whom she studied with starting at the age of 9. She’s got a few degrees and has been exhibited and taught all over the world. She’s truly a master artist.
I chose Autumn Scent to feature, which is one of her ‘daily paintings’, because it shows some of the traditional chinese style that she exhibits so well. These types of styles can be taught, they can be learned, and obviously they can be mastered by just about any watercolorist. However, by looking at Dalia’s work you can tell that she can paint in this style almost from muscle memory. Nothing looks forced, nothing copied. Every brushstroke seems to have purpose and is completely deliberate. She isn’t making it up as she goes along – she already knows what she wanted to do before any color hit the paper.
