So, she only has one sock. That is just one example of why this painting is so great. Otani has, in his own way, figured out a way to work a lot of subtle details into this painting without making them the focal point. I won’t give them all away – that would take away your opportunity to stare at this image for 10 minutes as I already have.

One of the things I love most about this particular piece is the use of blue. It almost seems overwhelming but somehow works just perfectly. By using small bits of whitespace between the subject and the kitchen even the same color blue doesn’t get lost.
