Plow by 凌 傑, or Jie Lin, in Taipei, Taiwan.
Every now and then while doing research for The Watercolor Gallery I come across a painting that feels like an instant classic. Like a painting done by one of the greats. Like a painting that I expect to one day see on Wikipedia under a brand-new artistic style that was founded in our time. This painting by Lin is such a painting.
Lin’s style is all over the place. I chose this particular piece because of how much it reminded me of the early works of Claude Monet. Monet’s early watercolor work was anything but special but yet, because of history, has become special. Lin’s work could easily find its way into that category. Sure, it doesn’t look like much to your eyes right now. But wait 50 years. Look back. You’ll want to have one of his pieces.
I’m no expert. In fact, that is why I started this gallery. But, I’m starting to get a feel for some of the things that have made the greats – well, great. And I think Lin’s got that.
