Untitled portrait by Andriy Yeroshewych in Odessa, Ukraine.

I’m currently working on my portraiture, mostly using pencils and haven’t yet taken the plunge in doing daily watercolor portraits (though that is where I’m headed). This is what I need to practice the most. I’m fairly satisfied with my abilities as an artist for many other subjects – just not portraits. I’m an aspiring plein air watercolor portrait artist.

This piece by Yroshewych is exactly the type of portraits I need to be practicing on. From what I can tell by looking at this image – Yroshewych had a very simple line sketch done before he started with the watercolors. He allows the paint, not the pencil, to dictate the lighting and shadows on the face.

I need to get over my fear of portraits. I’m going to start practicing today.

Don’t miss my interview with Andriy Yeroschewych.
