Studies in the human eye are one of the more popular exercises for any artist in any medium. Everything about a portrait is pivoted on the eye. No matter how great the rest of your painting may be if the eyes aren’t right the whole painting could be lost.
Jacobsen does a very nice job demonstrating some of the most interesting parts of the eye in this simple work. The color of the iris, the light reflecting off of the pupil, and the lashes that extend from just underneath the lower-lid.
Sometimes it is fun to just sit back and create a bunch of different eyes with different ranges of emotion; anger, hope, happiness, deep thought - and see what you end up liking for your next portrait.
