Bispo is an amazing figure and portrait artist that is relatively unknown on the Internet. He shares his work via Flickr from time-to-time and absolutely loves to play with color. Based on just a few of his photo comments you can tell that he enjoys mixing colors using very, very old methods.
This particular color, Dragon’s blood, comes from the sap of an Asian shrub known as Calamus draco. Bispo supposedly made this watercolor paint for this work. Now that is being a watercolor geek. Love it.
Now, onto the painting; it looks to me that Bispo almost used no water for this piece. Looking at the shirt of the subject you’d think this was ten with pencil. There are no saturation marks or drips. My guess is that this piece was done nearly dry.
